The New King of Retail Amazon Overtakes Walmart as U.S. Revenue Leader.
The landscape of American retail has reached a historic turning point. Amazon has officially overtaken Walmart as the largest company in the United States by annual revenue, unseating the retail giant that held the top spot for 16 consecutive years.
The Numbers Behind the Shift
According to the latest fiscal reports for 2025, Walmart reported a total annual revenue of $713 billion, representing a 4.7% year-on-year growth. However, Amazon eclipsed this figure with a staggering $717 billion in revenue, fueled by a much faster growth rate of 12.4%.
For Walmart, this transition was expected. Recognizing Amazon’s rapid ascent over the past decade, Walmart’s internal strategy has reportedly shifted. Instead of fighting to remain the "largest," the company is now focusing on being the "most preferred" shopping destination for consumers, prioritizing customer loyalty over sheer volume.
Evolving Landscapes and Divergent Strengths
Amazon’s rise to No. 1 signals a definitive shift in consumer behavior toward e-commerce. However, the crown comes with its own set of challenges:
The Grocery Struggle: Despite its dominance, Amazon continues to struggle with physical grocery retail. The company recently announced closures of several Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh locations to consolidate its focus on Whole Foods Market.
Diversified Income: Unlike Walmart’s retail-heavy model, a significant portion of Amazon’s revenue is driven by AWS (Amazon Web Services), its cloud computing powerhouse, which provides a high-margin cushion that traditional retail cannot match.
The key to Amazon's lead is its Prime ecosystem, which binds customers with streaming services and fast delivery. Walmart+ is catching up by highlighting its curbside pickup feature, a feature Amazon struggles to offer.
While Amazon wins in overall revenue, Walmart has a significant geographical advantage, as over 90% of Americans live within 10 miles of a Walmart store. Walmart is transforming these locations into micro-fulfillment centers to compete on same-day delivery of fresh produce.
By 2025-2026, both companies are poised to become giants in retail media networks. Amazon Ads generates massive revenue from direct product searches, which is even more profitable than actual product sales.
Amazon is using AI to predict inventory levels at the residential level (anticipatory shipping) to deliver goods to customers even before they place an order. This is a factor that will significantly outpace Walmart's sales growth in 2025.
