Following the recent backlash regarding its new age verification initiative, Discord has issued a follow-up statement to address the privacy concerns of its adult user base. The company clarified that the system is designed to be as non-intrusive as possible, aiming to protect minors without inconveniencing the general community.
"Business as Usual" for the Majority
Discord emphasized that the "vast majority" of users will be able to continue using the platform exactly as they do today. Contrary to initial fears, most users will not be forced to scan their faces or upload government-issued ID documents immediately.
Predictive Technology over Identity Verification
The platform explained that its primary line of defense is an "Age Estimation" system. This system uses existing data and behavioral patterns to predict whether an account belongs to a minor or an adult.
Seamless Experience: If the system is confident in its estimation, no action is required.
Targeted Verification: Only in suspicious cases where the system detects a high probability of a minor attempting to access age-restricted content will the user be prompted to undergo a formal identity or facial verification process.
Discord's age prediction system doesn't read specific private chats, but uses datasets such as birthdates provided during registration, types of servers frequently joined, and network relationships to create an age confidence profile (Age Confidence Score).
Discord works with organizations like NCMEC (National Center for Missing & Exploited Children) to generate alerts if adult accounts attempt to approach minors inappropriately. Age verification is therefore part of a larger security ecosystem.
For those requiring genuine identity verification, Discord often uses external partners like Yoti or Persona, which are global standards. Data is processed through encrypted systems and not stored on Discord's servers to minimize risk in case of data breaches.
This clarification focuses on concerns from server administrators of adult (NSFW) content who worry about member loss. If the system proves that the "most" members are genuinely adults based on predictions, the user experience in these communities should remain seamless.
