Bridging Design and Chat Google Workspace Users Can Now Manage Figma Comments via Google Chat.
Google Chat is experiencing a significant surge in popularity, largely due to its seamless inclusion within the Google Workspace ecosystem. By offering a robust enterprise messaging solution at no additional cost, it has become a formidable alternative to competitors like Slack. To further enhance its collaborative capabilities, Google has announced a deep integration with the design industry standard, Figma.
Seamless Design Workflow
This new integration bridges the gap between communication and design. Key features include:
Real-time Previews: Users can now view high-fidelity Figma file previews directly within Google Chat threads without switching tabs.
Bi-directional Commenting: You can now comment on Figma files by tagging Google Workspace users. More importantly, these comments can be replied to directly from the Google Chat interface.
Unified Identity: The system utilizes Google Workspace accounts, ensuring that mentions and notifications are synchronized across both platforms.
Prior to this update, Google Workspace had already begun integrating Figma into other core apps like Google Docs and Google Meet, signaling a broader strategy to become the primary hub for creative collaboration.
The biggest problem for designers and developers is constantly switching between screens (context switching). Google Chat's ability to respond to Figma comments natively will save time and make it much easier for teams not primarily using Figma (such as project managers or marketing) to contribute.
In an era where companies are trying to reduce software-a-service (SaaS) costs (SaaS sprawl), Google Chat's development to rival Slack's features has led many organizations to cancel their Slack subscriptions and fully switch to the free Google Chat (included in their existing package).
It's expected that in the near future, Google will introduce Gemini AI to summarize Figma comments in the chat, providing designers with an immediate overview of feedback without having to read each message individually.
After Adobe cancelled its acquisition of Figma, Figma had to quickly find a strong partner. Maintaining a strong partnership with Google is a key strategy in competing against other creative software suites.
