YouTube for Vision Pro is Finally Here 8K Streaming Arrives for M5 Models.
YouTube Officially Launches Native App for Apple Vision Pro with 8K Support for M5 Models

After a long-anticipated wait, YouTube has finally released its official native app for the Apple Vision Pro, marking the end of a two-year gap since the headset's initial debut. Back in 2024, the absence of a dedicated YouTube app forced early adopters to rely on Safari or third-party alternatives many of which were eventually removed for violating terms of service. Today, the wait is over for the definitive immersive video experience.

Full Feature Set and Immersive Capabilities

The YouTube app on Vision Pro is a fully-featured experience, mirroring the core functionalities found on other platforms, including:

  • User Accounts: Seamless access to Subscriptions, Watch History, and Playlists.

  • YouTube Shorts: A vertical video experience optimized for spatial computing.

  • Spatial Media Support: Full compatibility with 3D videos, 360-degree content, and VR180, allowing users to feel fully present within the video.

  • Environment Integration: The app supports Vision Pro’s "Environments," allowing users to dim their physical surroundings and watch videos in a cinematic virtual space.

The 8K Milestone

In a significant technical leap, YouTube has introduced 8K video playback support. However, there is a hardware caveat: this ultra-high-resolution streaming is exclusively reserved for the newest Vision Pro models equipped with the M5 chip, utilizing its superior decoding capabilities to maintain a smooth and crisp visual output.

The reason 8K video is limited to the M5 chip model is because processing high-resolution video in a 3D environment requires enormous bandwidth and improved heat management. The M5 chip features a newer video decoder that reduces power consumption when watching high-quality streaming better than the first-generation M2 chip.

YouTube has developed a new streaming system that works better with Apple's operating system, reducing latency when turning your head while watching 360-degree videos, a common problem when watching through the Safari browser.

This version of the app supports full multitasking. You can leave YouTube open in one corner of the room while opening other Vision Pro apps next to it without the video stopping.

Previously, popular third-party apps like Christian Selig's Juno filled this gap, but the arrival of the official app gives users access to new features such as Higher Bitrate (Enhanced Bitrate), which YouTube previously reserved only for its own app and Premium members.
