Windows "Smartphone-ification": Microsoft Announces New Security Layers to Combat Malware and Data Privacy

In a significant move to modernize OS security, Microsoft has unveiled two major architectural changes for Windows. These updates aim to bring the security standards of PCs closer to the "sandboxed" environments of smartphones, emphasizing verified software and explicit user consent.

1. Windows Baseline Security Mode

Microsoft is introducing Windows Baseline Security Mode, which fundamentally changes how the OS trusts software.

  • The Change: By default, Windows will only permit the execution of apps, services, and drivers that have been properly signed and verified.

  • The Goal: To prevent "stealth" malware from embedding itself within the system through unsigned or tampered files.

  • Flexibility: While this will be the new system default, users and IT administrators will retain the ability to modify these settings if they need to run specialized or legacy software.

2. User Transparency and Consent

Windows apps are moving toward a Permission-based model that users will find very familiar from iOS and Android.

  • The Change: Apps will now trigger Access Prompts when requesting permission to use the camera, microphone, location, or specific file folders.

  • The Goal: To eliminate "silent access" where apps could previously tap into sensitive hardware without the user’s direct knowledge. Although the official UI design has yet to be revealed, it is expected to be a standardized system prompt.

Collaboration with Industry Giants

Microsoft stressed that it remains committed to the "Openness" of Windows, allowing users to install software from any source. To ensure a smooth transition, they are already working with major developers, including Adobe, 1Password, CrowdStrike, EA, OpenAI, and Raycast, to refine these security protocols.

CrowdStrike's inclusion in the partner list is significant, reflecting lessons learned from past global system outages (Blue Screen of Death). Microsoft's enforcement of signed drivers reduces the likelihood of erroneous update files damaging the system's kernel.

The Access Prompt system will enhance security awareness among employees and allow IT departments to detect suspicious applications attempting to use microphones or cameras in online meeting rooms.

The collaboration with Raycast and OpenAI demonstrates Microsoft's preparation for the era of AI agents, high-access applications. This new security system will act as a "wall", ensuring AI only accesses authorized data.

Microsoft states that the changes will be gradual to avoid the pitfalls of Windows Vista's overly frequent and annoying User Account Control (UAC) prompts. The 2026 version is expected to utilize AI to learn user behavior and reduce unnecessary prompts.
