The Viral Moment Between Sam Altman and Dario Amodei at India’s AI Summit.
Awkward Encounter at India AI Impact Summit: Rivals Sam Altman and Dario Amodei Avoid Handshake

Yesterday, the Indian government hosted the prestigious India AI Impact Summit, a high-profile international seminar chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The event served as a massive display of India’s growing influence in the AI sector, drawing a "Who's Who" of global tech leaders, including Sundar Pichai (Google), Demis Hassabis (DeepMind), Sam Altman (OpenAI), Dario Amodei (Anthropic), and Alexandr Wang (Scale AI).

The Fist Bump Drama

While the summit aimed to boost investor confidence, the highlight on social media was an awkward moment during the "family photo" with PM Modi. Sam Altman and Dario Amodei, CEOs of direct competitors OpenAI and Anthropic, found themselves positioned right next to each other.

In a customary gesture of unity, the leaders were expected to hold hands and raise them together. However, both Altman and Amodei noticeably refused to lock hands, choosing instead to raise individual clenched fists. This icy interaction quickly went viral, underscoring the deep-seated rivalry between the two Silicon Valley giants.

The Roots of the Rivalry

The tension is not merely professional but personal. Dario Amodei was a core member of OpenAI, serving as the head of the development teams for GPT-2 and GPT-3. In 2021, Amodei led a split from the company to found Anthropic, citing fundamental disagreements regarding OpenAI’s commercial direction and its commitment to AI safety. Today, Anthropic backed by Amazon and Google is seen as the primary challenger to OpenAI’s dominance.

The fact that PM Modi was able to invite both Sam Altman and Dario Amodei to work together demonstrates India's positioning as an "AI Neutral Ground," a central area where US companies will compete for databases and skilled labor. India projects that the AI economy will significantly boost its GDP by 2030.

The conflict depicted in the photograph reflects the biggest rift in the AI landscape today: the "Accelerationalism" faction led by OpenAI and the "AI Safety" faction led by Anthropic, which are currently lobbying governments worldwide in different directions.

Not only Dario Amodei, but several senior executives from OpenAI recently resigned in 2024-2025 to start competing companies or join Anthropic, making Sam Altman's status in the eyes of his former subordinates a constant point of interest in the IT industry.

Recent data indicates that the Claude 4 model (expected to be released this year) is heavily challenging GPT-5 in terms of reasoning capabilities and human-like qualities. This confrontation is therefore a clash between the "number one" and the "most dangerous challenger."
