Meta to Retire "Horizon Workrooms": The Virtual Office Closes Its Doors

Meta has officially announced the sunsetting of its virtual reality workspace, Horizon Workrooms. The service will officially shut down on February 16, 2026. After this date, users will no longer be able to access the platform, and all associated data within Workrooms will be permanently deleted.

Immediate Action Required for Data Recovery

Meta is urging all users and organizations to back up their information before the deadline. If you have been using Workrooms for collaborative projects, you can review and download your data via the following channels:

  • workrooms.workplace.com

  • accountscenter.meta.com

  • The Admin Console for enterprise accounts.

Warning: Once the shutdown is complete, any data left on the servers will be unrecoverable.

A Look Back at the VR Office Experiment

Launched in 2021, Horizon Workrooms was a cornerstone of Meta’s vision for the "Metaverse." It was designed to replicate the physical office experience through personalized avatars and advanced features such as:

  • Remote Desktop Integration: Viewing and controlling your PC within VR.

  • Keyboard Tracking: Seeing your physical keyboard while wearing a headset.

  • Spatial Audio and Virtual Whiteboards: Making remote brainstorming feel "real."

Why Now? The Pivot to Partnerships

Meta's decision to close Workrooms doesn't mean the end of VR work, but rather a shift in strategy. Instead of building a standalone office app, Meta is leaning into partnerships with established productivity giants.

Moving forward, Meta recommends that users transition to alternative immersive experiences, including:

  • Meta Quest Remote Desktop app: For individual productivity.

  • Microsoft Teams Immersive Spaces: Bringing VR collaboration to the world’s most popular work app.

  • Zoom Workplace: Exploring meetings in 3D environments.
