WhatsApp Launches Browser-Based Web Calling with Group Waiting Rooms and Noise Cancellation

WhatsApp has officially rolled out native web calling support, enabling users to initiate and receive voice and video calls directly from their desktop web browsers without installing additional software or desktop applications.

According to WhatsApp, the feature is tailored for users on shared family or workplace computers, locked-down devices that restrict third-party software installation, or individuals who prefer maintaining a minimal desktop footprint by handling daily tasks strictly through a browser interface.

The web-based calling capabilities support both one-on-one and group calls. Alongside core calling, WhatsApp has introduced several supporting features:

  • Seamless Device Switching: Allows users to transition ongoing calls between mobile devices and web browsers mid-conversation without dropping the connection.

  • Waiting Rooms for Group Calls: Gives group admins control over call entry by requiring approval before new participants can join.

  • Enhanced Audio and Video Controls: Features QuickHD video rendering for clearer visual streams and integrated automatic noise suppression to reduce background audio interference.

WhatsApp confirmed that the browser calling update has begun rolling out globally and will be accessible to all users in the coming weeks.

Web calling bypasses IT administrator limitations in enterprise or educational environments. Employees and students often lack the permission to install standalone desktop applications (.exe or .dmg). Enabling full-fledged WebRTC voice and video calling within a browser tab allows for seamless communication on managed devices without violating local security policies.

With the introduction of features such as waiting rooms, seamless device handover during calls, and background noise reduction, WhatsApp Web is encroaching on the space of traditional video conferencing tools like Google Meet and Zoom. The addition of host permission controls transforms WhatsApp from a personal messaging utility into a lightweight, professional meeting tool for small businesses and group projects.

Browser calling relies on the advanced WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) protocol. Combined with WhatsApp's custom low-latency codecs, features like QuickHD dynamically adjust stream resolution based on available network bandwidth and local hardware capabilities. This prevents the browser tab from excessively consuming CPU or RAM during extended multi-party video conversations.
