While the world celebrates AI for making lives easier, former Spanish national team coach Robert Moreno has become a cautionary tale of how over-reliance on technology can lead to a career downfall. Moreno was recently sacked by the Russian club FK Sochi after a disastrous run—collecting just one point from seven matches—amid sensational claims that he outsourced his managerial duties to ChatGPT.
The 28-Hour Sleep Deprivation Scandal
The club's former sporting director revealed that suspicions grew during the 2024-25 season. Moreno reportedly began using ChatGPT to automate team logistics, including training schedules and travel itineraries.
The turning point came when the AI suggested a travel schedule that would have forced players to remain awake for 28 consecutive hours. While the club managed to intervene and scrap the "insane" plan before it was implemented, the damage was done—the players' trust in Moreno’s leadership began to evaporate.
Recruitment by Algorithm
Moreno’s reliance on AI didn't stop at logistics. He allegedly used ChatGPT to identify and sign a new striker during the transfer window. The result? The AI-picked forward failed to score a single goal and was sold off the following season. With zero goals on the board and a locker room in revolt, FK Sochi finally pulled the plug, sacking Moreno shortly after the start of the new season.
- This case perfectly illustrates the problem of AI hallucination. ChatGPT didn't "know" that an athlete's body needed rest; it simply "calculated" a schedule based on prompts without considering human limitations. Implementing AI without human-in-the-loop monitoring is therefore a high-risk endeavor.
- In current football, data analytics is widely used (e.g., Brighton or Brentford), but they use "raw data" and advanced statistical models, not typical chatbots. Chatbots often use outdated data from the internet, which may not reflect current player form or injury status.
- The heart of football is psychology. When players realize that a coach isn't using their own intuition or experience but instead relying on a chatbot, their authority and credibility are instantly lost—something AI cannot yet replace as a "team leader."
- Moreno's case serves as a management study demonstrating that AI should only be an "assistant," not a "decision maker," especially in tasks involving human feelings and limitations.
