Indonesia banned the Grok chatbot yesterday, citing concerns about the AI's ability to generate pornography. This makes Indonesia the first country to ban Grok after several nations announced investigations over the past week.
The day before, xAI, the developer of Grok, stated that it had restricted the chatbot's image-generating capabilities to subscription customers only, a precautionary measure as subscribers are required to provide identifying information.
Indonesia's Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs issued a statement saying Grok's deepfake pornography generation capability violates digital rights and safety. The ministry has contacted xAI for further discussions on best practices.
