Microsoft has officially upped the ante in the custom silicon race with the debut of the Maia 200, its latest AI accelerator designed specifically for high-density server workloads. Manufactured using TSMC’s advanced 3nm process, Microsoft claims the Maia 200 is currently the highest-performing AI accelerator ever developed by a major cloud service provider.

Crushing the Competition: Specs and Performance

Microsoft explicitly positioned the Maia 200 as a direct rival to AWS’s Trainium 3 and Google’s TPU v7. The technical specifications are a massive leap forward:

  • Massive Bandwidth: Features 216GB of HBM3e memory with a staggering 7TB/s bandwidth.

  • On-Chip Storage: Equipped with 272MB of SRAM.

  • Processing Power: Delivers a peak performance of 10.145 PFLOPS (FP4) and 5.072 PFLOPS (FP8).

Efficiency Meets Economics

Beyond raw power, Microsoft emphasized the cost-effectiveness of its custom silicon. The Maia 200 provides a 30% improvement in performance-per-dollar compared to previous-generation hardware. This efficiency is crucial as the company scales its infrastructure to meet the immense computational demands of generative AI.

Immediate Deployment

The Maia 200 is not just a prototype; it is already being deployed across several Azure data centers in the United States. It currently supports some of the world’s most advanced AI models, including OpenAI’s GPT-5.2, Microsoft Foundry, and the entire Microsoft 365 Copilot ecosystem.

  • The development of Maia 200 is a significant step for Microsoft in its efforts to reduce its reliance on NVIDIA GPUs (such as the H200 or B200). While still collaborating, having its own chip allows Microsoft to fine-tune the hardware to perfectly match the GPT-5.2 algorithm.
  • TSMC's move to 3nm technology means Microsoft can pack transistors denser while using less power, crucial for managing thermal issues in large data centers.
  • Microsoft is building what it calls a "Vertically Integrated Stack," encompassing the chip (Maia), the cloud (Azure), and the software (Copilot). This control over all aspects allows Microsoft to update new features faster than competitors who have to wait for hardware from external suppliers.
  • Reportedly, Maia 200 is designed to work with Azure's new liquid cooling system (Sidekick), enabling the chip to operate at peak performance continuously without thermal throttling.
