Meta has officially announced a temporary suspension of its AI Character chatbots for teenage users. While the company stated that the feature will return after a series of updates, a specific timeline remains undisclosed. Despite this pause, teens can still interact with the standard Meta AI for general information and search queries.
The Shift Toward Parental Oversight
The decision is largely driven by feedback from parents and child safety advocates. Meta admitted that guardians are increasingly demanding more robust tools to monitor and control their children's interactions with AI entities. To address this, Meta is working on a suite of content moderation and supervision features specifically designed for AI-to-teen communication.
Part of the "Teen Account" Initiative
This move aligns with Meta’s broader strategy to prioritize safety for young users. Recently, the company launched "Teen Accounts" on Instagram and Facebook—a specialized account type with built-in protections, private messaging restrictions, and time-management tools.
- Child psychologists have expressed concerns that AI personas, which mimic human personalities, may create "parasocial relationships" that are too deep for teenagers, potentially impacting their real-world social development. Meta is therefore being cautious about programming its AI to ensure appropriateness.
- This move comes after controversies surrounding competitor Character.ai's inappropriate content for children, prompting Meta to "step back" and upgrade its content filtering system.
- In the near future, Meta is expected to add a feature to its Parental Supervision Hub that will allow parents to see the topics their children discuss with the AI without violating privacy by reading the entire chat.
- The European Union (EU) and the United States are heavily pressuring technology companies through legislation like the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), which requires them to provide evidence that their AI does not harm the mental health of young people.
