Netflix Open-Sources "VOID": A Powerful AI Tool for Seamless Object Removal in Video Production

Netflix has officially released a specialized AI model named VOID, designed specifically for high-fidelity object removal in video. Unlike traditional tools, VOID doesn't just "erase" a subject; it intelligently removes the associated "environmental impacts" such as shadows, reflections, or ripples ensuring a seamless and cinematically consistent result.

The Multi-Model Workflow

While VOID is highly capable, its workflow is sophisticated and requires integration with other top-tier AI models. To achieve a clean result, users must follow a multi-step process:

  1. Masking: Use Gemini and SAM 2 (Segment Anything Model 2) to identify and create a precise mask of the object to be removed.

  2. Description: Provide a text prompt describing the desired background or "after-effect" once the object is gone.

  3. Rendering: VOID then processes the video, reconstructing the missing pixels and adjusting the lighting and environment.

Despite the multi-layered setup, this AI-driven approach is expected to drastically cut down the time required for manual "rotoscoping" and "clean plating" in professional post-production.

Open-Source Accessibility

In a move that supports the wider creative community, Netflix has released VOID under the Apache 2.0 license, making it free to download and modify for both personal and commercial use.

A major problem with early AI object removal was leaving behind "shadows" or "reflections" (ghosting). However, VOID was trained to understand light physics, allowing it to calculate how the reflected light on the surrounding road should disappear when a car is removed. This saves VFX artists enormous time.

Notice that Netflix didn't create an all-in-one AI; instead, they focused on making VOID excel at a single task (inpainting/outpainting) and then leveraged it with powerful models like Meta's SAM 2 and Google's Gemini. This is a trend called Modular AI, which emphasizes combining specialized models (chain of models) to achieve the best results.

Using the Apache 2.0 license challenges proprietary tools like Adobe Generative Fill. Developers worldwide can immediately embed VOID into video editing programs like DaVinci Resolve or Blender, accelerating the development of high-end editing tools at lower or even free prices.

Besides removing wires or crew members who accidentally got into the frame, VOID also has the potential for "film restoration," such as removing scratches or dust from the original film to make it as sharp as if it were shot with a modern digital camera.
