Google Unveils "Skills" for Chrome: Supercharge Your Browser with Savable AI Prompts

Google has introduced a powerful new feature called "Skills" as part of the Gemini in Chrome integration. This update is designed to streamline workflows by allowing users to save, organize, and reuse their most frequent AI prompts with just a few clicks.

Efficiency at Your Fingertips

The "Skills" feature eliminates the need to manually re-type complex instructions. Once a user enters a prompt, they can save it as a "Skill" for future use. Accessing these saved commands is seamless:

  • The "/" Shortcut: Simply type "/" in the Gemini side panel to pull up your list of saved Skills.

  • The "+" Menu: Alternatively, click the "+" icon to browse and trigger your custom AI workflows.

A Library of Inspiration

For those looking for a starting point, Google has launched a Skills Library. This curated collection features ready-to-use templates, such as:

  • Dynamic Meal Planning: Calculate nutritional data or adjust recipes based on available ingredients.

  • Curated Gift Ideas: Generate personalized shopping lists based on specific interests.

  • Custom Storytelling: Reformat text into specific narrative styles or professional tones instantly.

The "Skills" update is rolling out today for Gemini in Chrome on desktop in supported regions worldwide.

Writing effective prompts is a crucial skill, but the problem is we often forget effective commands. Having Skills allows ordinary users to create "custom tools" without writing code, such as buttons to "summarize this research article in 3 points" or "check English email grammar for a more polite appearance."

Because Skills is embedded in Chrome, it can instantly access the content of the webpage you're currently reading (screen context). When you use a Skill, the AI processes the saved commands along with the on-screen information, dramatically speeding up tasks like analyzing stock data or summarizing news.

While currently starting on desktop, Google plans to sync these Skills through your Google account. This means that in the future, you can save Skills on your work computer and access them instantly through Chrome on your tablet or mobile phone, creating a seamless AI experience.

Many users are becoming tired of constantly having to think of new commands every time they use AI. Shifting from a "chat" system to a "button-based AI" system will lower the barrier and make Gemini a more integrated part of daily life.
