The Bing-aissance Microsoft Search Engine Finally Topped 1 Billion Users.
Bing Hits Historical Milestone: Surpassing 1 Billion Monthly Active Users

During Microsoft latest quarterly earnings call, CEO Satya Nadella announced a historic breakthrough: Bing has officially surpassed 1 billion monthly active users (MAU) for the first time in its 16-year history.

The Great Acceleration

Jordi Ribas, Microsoft Head of Search, elaborated on this achievement, noting that Bing’s growth over the last five years has significantly outpaced its progress during its first decade. Since its launch in 2009, Bing has evolved from a traditional search engine into a multi-platform intelligent service. While Ribas did not explicitly list the specific drivers of this surge, industry analysts point toward Microsoft's aggressive integration of Generative AI (Copilot) and the revitalization of the Edge browser as key catalysts.

Microsoft Ecosystem: Q1 2026 Snapshot

Beyond Bing, Nadella shared impressive figures across Microsoft’s diverse portfolio:

  • Windows: Now powers 1.6 billion monthly active devices worldwide.

  • LinkedIn: Membership has climbed to 1.3 billion users.

  • Microsoft 365: Consumer subscriptions have reached nearly 95 million.

  • Microsoft Edge: Has achieved 20 consecutive quarters of growth in user share.

  • Xbox Game Pass: Reached a new all-time high in subscriber count (specific figures were not disclosed).

The main factor driving Bing's strong growth over the past five years is its shift in image from "Google's alternative" to an "AI Answer Engine." Being one of the first to implement the GPT-4 model in Bing has encouraged people worldwide to try Bing for more complex answers than simply clicking links, significantly attracting Gen Z and young professionals.

Bing's success is inseparable from Microsoft Edge. Microsoft embeds Bing and Copilot directly into the browser's sidebar and taskbar in Windows 11/12. This creates a "frictionless experience," making it easier for 1.6 billion Windows users to access Bing than traditionally using Google Search.

The presence of 1.3 billion LinkedIn users gives Bing a distinct advantage in professional and B2B information searches. While Google focuses on general information, Bing excels at connecting users with career and employment data a segment dominated by Microsoft and a key factor in the strong user base reaching 1 billion users.
