OpenAI Breaks Cloud Silos GPT-5.5 Now Live on AWS Bedrock.
OpenAI Launches GPT-5.5 on AWS Bedrock Following Partnership Restructuring

Just two days after amending its partnership with Microsoft, OpenAI has officially launched its flagship GPT-5.5 models on Amazon Web Services (AWS) via AWS Bedrock. The launch includes both the GPT-5.5 API and the highly anticipated Codex service.

Breaking the Cloud Lock-In

For a long time, AWS had been eager to host OpenAI’s models. However, previous contractual exclusivity forced OpenAI to offer its LLM APIs exclusively on Microsoft Azure. Consequently, AWS had to resort to providing "Stateful Runtime Environments" as a workaround. With the new partnership amendment, OpenAI is now free to pursue multi-cloud alliances, allowing it to bring its cutting-edge models to the AWS ecosystem directly.

Key Offerings on AWS Bedrock

  • GPT-5.5 & GPT-5.4: Currently available in a closed preview. Interested users must sign up for access.

  • Codex: Now accessible via AWS Bedrock. A major benefit for enterprise users is that Codex usage counts toward their existing AWS usage commitments.

  • Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents: This new service enables developers to build AI agents equipped with built-in memory and specialized skill modules, streamlining the creation of autonomous workflows.

This launch signals the end of cloud-exclusive AI. Developers are the real winners here, as they can now deploy OpenAI's most powerful models on their preferred cloud infrastructure without the high costs and complexity of migrating data to Azure.

While a powerful model is impressive, a "Managed Agent" that can handle memory and integration with corporate data is what enterprises actually need. By pairing GPT-5.5 with AWS's robust agent infrastructure, OpenAI and Amazon are effectively lowering the barrier to entry for large-scale AI deployment.

Allowing Codex usage to count toward existing AWS contracts is a masterstroke for enterprise sales. It eliminates the need for procurement departments to sign new, separate contracts, making it significantly easier for CIOs to integrate these tools into their existing tech stacks.
