X Launches Custom Timelines AI-Curated Feeds Powered by Grok.
Nikita Bier, Head of Product at X, has officially introduced Custom Timelines, a new feature that allows users to create personalized sub-feeds based on specific topics of interest. Bier describes this as "one of the most significant architectural changes to the X experience" marking the culmination of months of intensive development.
How It Works: Precision Curation
Users can now navigate to the Home tab and select specific topics to generate a dedicated feed. The content displayed in these timelines is powered by a sophisticated blend of Grok’s AI intelligence and the user's individual engagement history.
The "Learning" Effect: Bier emphasizes that the Custom Timelines become increasingly accurate the more users engage with the posts within them. The AI actively learns from your likes, replies, and reposts, refining the relevance of future content.
Availability and Access
At launch, X is offering 75 distinct topics ranging from food, art, and photography to business, finance, and movies.
Subscription & Platform: The feature is currently exclusive to Premium subscribers and is rolling out first on iOS and Web. An Android rollout is scheduled to follow in the coming weeks.
The biggest problem with X over the years has been "noise," or junk information cluttering the main news feed, making users feel overwhelmed. Implementing Custom Timelines was a very clever strategy, transforming X from a "general news" platform into a "niche community" where users can choose to consume only what they truly want to see.
This feature is a "killer feature" for Grok. Competitor algorithms often base their content selection on popularity, but Grok has the ability to analyze the context of posts in greater detail, resulting in a deeper and more relevant feed than feeds curated using conventional methods.
For Premium subscribers, this is well worth the money. It makes X a tool for work or knowledge gathering, rather than just entertainment. This helps reduce the churn rate and fosters greater loyalty among paying premium users.
