[Rumor] Microsoft Rebuilding Windows 11 Start Menu for More Customization and Speed.
Microsoft Overhauling Windows 11 Start Menu: More Customization and Speed Expected

According to reports from Windows Central, Microsoft is in the process of rebuilding the Windows 11 Start Menu from the ground up. This initiative aligns with the company's broader commitment to improving the core quality of the OS while placing a greater emphasis on listening to user feedback.

What’s Changing?

The new Start Menu is being developed using WinUI 3, aiming for a more modern and responsive architecture. While the overall aesthetic will remain familiar to current Windows 11 users, the functionality is receiving a significant upgrade:

  • Granular Customization: Microsoft is introducing deep control over the interface. Users will finally be able to toggle off specific sections, such as the "Recommended" file list or the "Pinned Apps" area, providing a cleaner, more personalized experience.

  • Resizable Interface: Say goodbye to a one-size-fits-all approach. The new version will allow users to adjust the Start Menu's dimensions to fit their specific workflow and screen layout.

  • Performance Boost: Beyond aesthetics, the core engine has been optimized. Even during heavy system load when the CPU is under stress the new menu is designed to remain snappy, with significantly faster app search results.

The switch to WinUI 3 is a significant turning point. WinUI 3 is a more modern framework than the previous UI (which mixed old and new XAML), reducing "memory bloat" or excessive RAM usage in the old Start Menu and resulting in smoother graphics rendering (60/120 FPS).

The "Recommended" (or sometimes suggested) feature has always been a major complaint from users. Microsoft allowing this feature to be disabled signals their shift towards community-driven development to address criticisms of bloatware and in-menu advertising.

The increased speed and smarter search are not just UI improvements; they pave the way for Windows AI Agents. In the future, the Start Menu will be more than just a program launcher; it will become a command center where you can search for information on your device or command AI directly without opening other apps.
