Spotify Update More Control Over Visuals But Video Ads Are Here to Stay.
Spotify Empowers Users with New "Audio-First" Controls: Manage Canvas and Music Videos Globally

Spotify has announced a significant update allowing users more granular control over video content within the app. Both Premium and Free users can now toggle various video features on or off, catering to those who prefer a distraction-free, "Audio-First" experience.

Customizing Your Visual Experience

By navigating to Settings > Content and Display, users can now independently manage the following features:

  • Canvas: The short, looping visuals that accompany specific tracks.

  • Music Videos: Full-length video content integrated within the platform.

  • Other Visual Elements: Additional promotional or immersive video content.

This update is a welcome change for users looking to save data, conserve battery life, or simply focus entirely on the music. However, Spotify clarified that video advertisements for Free users will continue to play as usual, regardless of these settings.

The Evolution of Video on Spotify

While Spotify began as a pure audio streaming service, it has steadily integrated video features over the years. This journey started with the introduction of Canvas in 2018 and expanded significantly two years ago with the launch of full-scale music videos directly inside the app to compete with platforms like YouTube.

Even with faster internet speeds, many users are still concerned about battery drain from apps that constantly loop videos. Allowing the complete closure of Canvas genuinely extends smartphone battery life, especially during long journeys.

This year's app design trend emphasizes minimalism. "Purists," or true music lovers, often find the moving Canvas distracting while reading lyrics or admiring beautiful album art. Adding this close-up button addresses the needs of Spotify's loyal fans.

Spotify's willingness to allow video closure demonstrates its confidence in its position as an "audio leader," unlike YouTube Music which focuses primarily on video. Giving users freedom of choice is a strength that allows Spotify to maintain a user base focused on listening.

For artists, Canvas is a crucial tool for creative communication. However, the close-up button doesn't mean decreased views; on the contrary, it provides artists with clearer data on which fans appreciate visuals and which prioritize listening, enabling more precise marketing strategies.
