X Unveils XChat A Standalone Encrypted App for Private Conversations.
X (formerly Twitter) has officially entered the standalone messaging arena with the launch of XChat. After a period of beta testing and a rebranding of its internal direct messaging (DM) system, X has now released XChat as a dedicated application for iPhone and iPad, marking a significant shift in how users communicate on the platform.
Privacy at the Core
Designed as a "distraction-free zone" for private conversation, XChat distinguishes itself from the main X app with a focus on high-security messaging:
End-to-End Encryption: Every conversation is secured, ensuring that only the sender and recipient can access the content. The app even requires a unique PIN/Passcode upon setup for an added layer of protection.
Proactive Privacy Tools: Features include the ability to block screenshots, edit sent messages, and set messages to "disappear" after a specific duration.
Feature-Rich Experience: Beyond standard text, XChat supports voice and video calls, file sharing, and group chats of up to 350 people.
Availability
XChat is currently available as a free download on the App Store for iOS and iPadOS. It integrates seamlessly with existing X accounts, allowing users to tap into their established network of contacts without needing to rebuild their social graph.
XChat is more than just a chat app; it's a crucial piece of Elon Musk's vision to transform X into an "Everything App." Separating the chat app allows X to develop payment and private communication features more efficiently, without being constrained by the technical limitations of the core app which focuses on public timelines.
Elon Musk has stated that the ultimate goal is for users to "stop using phone numbers" for communication and manage everything through X alone. The launch of XChat is the clearest first step in shifting user behavior from SMS or other general chat apps to fully integrating into the X ecosystem.
The addition of features like "Screenshot Blocking" and "PIN Authentication" makes XChat a direct competitor to highly secure chat apps like Signal or Telegram, especially targeting the crypto and investor segments concerned about privacy – a large core user base for X today.
