Snap Announces Major Restructuring: Cutting 1,000 Jobs to Pivot Toward AI and Profitability

Snap Inc., the parent company of Snapchat, has announced a comprehensive restructuring plan that includes laying off approximately 1,000 employees, representing roughly 16% of its global workforce. In addition to the layoffs, the company confirmed that around 300 open positions will be permanently closed.

Focusing on Core Priorities

In an internal memo sent to all staff, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel explained that the restructuring is designed to streamline operations and accelerate the company’s path to long-term profitability. "We are reorganizing to focus on our most critical missions, increase our operational speed, and drive growth," Spiegel stated.

The AI Efficiency Play

A key highlight of the announcement is Snap’s aggressive pivot toward Artificial Intelligence. Spiegel noted that integrating AI into the company's internal workflows and consumer products is essential for future efficiency. Recent successes cited include:

  • Snapchat+ Enhancements: Utilizing AI to drive record subscriber growth for its premium service.

  • Ad System Overhaul: Implementing machine learning to improve ad targeting and ROI for partners.

  • Infrastructure Optimization: Leveraging AI to refine the "Snap Lite" backend for better performance in emerging markets.

We're seeing a trend where mid-sized social media companies like Snap are having to adapt significantly. This round of layoffs reflects Snap's transition from relying heavily on a large human workforce to using AI agents to manage back-end systems and filter content, aiming to reduce fixed costs and increase profit per employee.

Amidst the layoffs, Snapchat+ (the subscription service) remains a strength. The use of AI to create fun features like My AI and AI-powered profile image generation provides Snap with recurring revenue, beyond the volatile advertising revenue that fluctuates with economic conditions.

Even with workforce reductions, Snap continues to invest heavily in Augmented Reality (AR) and its new Spectacles headsets. The AI-powered Lens Studio, designed to make it easier for developers to create Lenses, is a key strategy to retain its Gen Z user base and prevent them from switching to TikTok or Instagram.

Spiegel's mention of Snap Lite in his notes is significant. Because it means targeting developing countries where mobile phones may not be very powerful, using AI to compress data and optimize app performance will allow Snap to expand its global user base without needing massive server resources.
