[Rumor] Apple Bringing Generative AI Editing to the Photos App
WWDC 2026 Rumor Mill: Will iOS 27 Bring Generative AI to the Photos App?

With the Apple WWDC 2026 keynote just one month away, the rumor mill is hitting its peak. While Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman had previously suggested that iOS 27 would focus primarily on stability over flashy new features, he has now teased a major potential upgrade for the native Photos app, powered by Apple Intelligence.

What’s Expected?

If these features make the cut, iOS 27 could introduce a revamped photo-editing interface that leverages generative AI to handle complex tasks with ease. Gurman highlights three key tools expected to integrate directly into the Photos app:

  • Extend: Uses generative AI to "outpaint" and create new image data around the edges of a photo, allowing users to expand their composition.

  • Enhance: An automated suite that intelligently improves lighting, contrast, and color balance to professional standards.

  • Reframe: Intelligently adjusts the perspective and cropping of a photo to create a more compelling composition.

Notably, these tools are expected to support Spatial Photos, Apple’s 3D format, allowing users to apply AI editing to their depth-aware imagery.

The Reality Check

However, don't set your expectations in stone just yet. Gurman adds a note of caution: internal testing is reportedly yielding inconsistent results. The "Extend" feature, in particular, is proving difficult to stabilize, leading to speculation that Apple may hold back these tools until a later iOS 27.x update rather than debuting them at WWDC.

The most difficult part of Apple's attempt to make its AI support Spatial Photos (3D) is its processing. "Extending" 3D images means the AI has to calculate a "depth map," or the distance between objects in areas without actual image data. This means Apple isn't just processing pixels (2D), but recreating the image's "geometry," a technology that consumes enormous system resources.

The news of less-than-ideal test results reflects Apple's philosophy: "We won't release a feature until it's perfect." This contrasts with competitors who focus on releasing AI for testing and then fixing bugs. This is why Apple Intelligence is often considered the most reliable among general users, even if it arrives later.

One key question is: will the "Extend" feature run on-device or in the cloud? If Apple can run this feature on M-series or A-series chips without uploading images to the cloud, it would be a major privacy achievement, a key selling point over Google Photos.
