Gemini "Personal Intelligence" Goes Global: Google Expands Context-Aware AI to Most Regions

Google has officially announced the global expansion (with a few exceptions) of its Personal Intelligence features for Gemini, effective immediately. This follows a successful initial rollout limited to the United States back in January 2026.

What is Personal Intelligence?

Personal Intelligence serves as a bridge between Gemini and the Google ecosystem. By enabling this feature, users allow the AI to access and understand their basic data across various Google services, including:

  • Communication & Scheduling: Gmail and Google Calendar.

  • Storage & Productivity: Google Drive and Google Photos.

  • Interests & Habits: YouTube, Google Search history, and more.

This integration allows Gemini to provide highly tailored responses, such as summarizing specific emails, finding files based on vague descriptions, or planning trips based on previous search interests and calendar availability.

Availability and Restrictions

The feature is currently in Beta and is prioritized for Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers.

  • Workspace Users: Not available at this stage.

  • Free Tier Users: Expected to receive access at a later date.

  • Excluded Regions: Due to ongoing regulatory and compliance reviews, the feature remains unavailable in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, the UK, South Korea, Australia, and Nigeria.

Gemini isn't just for finding information; it's becoming a full-fledged personal assistant. For example, you can say, "Gemini, summarize my itinerary in an email and check if I have enough free time on Wednesday afternoon in my calendar to go to a museum." The AI will process information from Gmail and Calendar simultaneously to answer your question instantly.

While it has access to personal data, Google emphasizes security. The data Gemini accesses through personal intelligence is only used to "create answers just for you" and will not be used to train core models on a public level. This is a point Google is trying to build trust in to compete with rivals like Apple Intelligence.

With this feature, you can ask Gemini to find "a concert ticket photo I saved in Photos last month" or "a PDF about a lease agreement in a deep folder in Drive" with a single voice or typed command, drastically reducing the time spent searching for files manually.

The fact that it's not yet available in the EEA or the UK reflects the strictness of AI Act and GDPR laws. Cross-app data access by AI requires a more complex consent process and data retention mechanism than in other regions.
