Google AI Transformation: 75% of New Code Now Generated by AI

At the Google Cloud Next '26 conference held last week, CEO Sundar Pichai revealed a milestone that signals a fundamental shift in software development: 75% of all new code at Google is now generated by AI. This represents a dramatic jump from the 50% figure reported just one year ago.

Accelerating Legacy Migrations

Pichai highlighted a critical application of this technology: the modernization of legacy codebases. Migrating outdated infrastructure to modern standards has historically been a labor-intensive, time-consuming nightmare.

Google has now streamlined this process using a specialized multi-agent AI system. The migration workflow is divided into three functional roles:

  • Planner: Outlines the strategy and scope of the migration.

  • Orchestrator: Coordinates the execution and manages dependencies.

  • Coder: Writes the actual implementation based on the plan.

According to Pichai, this agentic approach has accelerated the migration of legacy code by 6x compared to traditional manual methods.

The 75% figure indicates that the role of software engineers at Google is rapidly changing. From previously spending time "typing code manually" (manual coding), engineers' work is now shifting towards "system review and orchestration." This means that the key skill of the future will be understanding system architecture rather than simply memorizing programming syntax.

The 75% use of AI to write code presents a long-term challenge in terms of "technical debt." AI may write code that works but isn't optimally optimized. Google's use of a 3-agent system (Planner, Orchestrator, Coder) is a very smart strategy because it creates an integrated "review" process from planning to completion, minimizing the chance of errors.

The six-fold faster migration of old code is a "game changer" for large organizations with decades of accumulated technical debt. Tasks that previously required hundreds of people and took years can now be completed in a few months. This result allows Google to release new features significantly faster than its competitors.
