Meta Announces Price Hike for Quest 3 and 3S: Rising Hardware Costs Blamed

Meta has officially announced a price increase across its popular VR headset lineup, affecting both the premium Meta Quest 3 and the budget-friendly Meta Quest 3S. The company cited surging hardware manufacturing costs specifically the rising price of memory components (DRAM/NAND) as the primary reason for the adjustment.

New Pricing Details

The price hike will go into effect on April 19, 2026. Consumers looking to snag a headset at the original launch price have just a 48-hour window remaining to complete their purchase.

The updated pricing structure is as follows:

  • Meta Quest 3S (128 GB): Now $349.99 (Up from $299.99) — +$50 increase

  • Meta Quest 3S (256 GB): Now $449.99 (Up from $399.99) — +$50 increase

  • Meta Quest 3 (512 GB): Now $599.99 (Up from $499.99) — +$100 increase

The reason Meta cites, "memory cost," is significant. The global market has a massive demand for high-performance memory for AI data centers, driving up memory chip prices and impacting general hardware manufacturers who must compete for this resource.

Historically, Meta has often sold hardware at near-profit (or even loss-making) prices to attract users to its ecosystem. This price adjustment may signal Meta's shift toward a "hardware sustainability" strategy, aiming for a self-sustaining hardware business that doesn't rely solely on advertising revenue.

Even with the price increase, compared to competitors like the Apple Vision Pro (which is several times more expensive) or other high-end headsets, the Meta Quest 3 remains the most cost-effective VR/MR headset for general use and gaming.

A $50-$100 price increase might slightly affect entry-level users, but for professional users, a $100 price increase for the 512GB model might be considered normal given the continued performance and software updates Meta provides.
