Roblox Overhauls Safety Standards: New Age-Based Account Tiers and Developer Mandates

To bolster its commitment to child safety, Roblox has announced a major restructuring of its platform. Starting June 2026, the global gaming platform will categorize user accounts into three distinct tiers based on age, ensuring that content and social interactions are strictly aligned with developmental stages.

The New Roblox Account Tiers:

  • Roblox Kids (Ages 5–8): This tier restricts access to experiences with "Mild" violence or suggestive themes. Communication is locked down, with chat features disabled by default. Parents must manually enable chat via updated Parental Controls.

  • Roblox Select (Ages 9–15): Users in this bracket can access "Moderate" content. Chat functionality is available but remains subject to regional regulations and safety filters.

  • Roblox (Ages 16+): Standard accounts with access to all content, though specific experiences may still be restricted to users 18 and older via age verification.

New Requirements for Developers

Roblox is also tightening the reins on creators. Developers targeting audiences under 16 must now meet stringent criteria:

  • Identity Verification: Mandatory ID checks for all creators.

  • Security Protocol: Enabling Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) and connecting to Parental Control systems (if the developer is a minor).

  • Roblox Plus Subscription: A monthly fee of $4.99 is required to publish to these protected age groups.

  • Active Monitoring: Once a game is live, Roblox will deploy automated systems to monitor gameplay patterns and ensure they remain compliant with safety guidelines.

Roblox implemented a gameplay monitoring system to combat dark patterns—game mechanics that encourage addictive behavior or predatory monetization, a topic heavily scrutinized by regulatory bodies worldwide.

Collecting Roblox Plus subscription fees from developers isn't just about revenue; it's a gatekeeping measure to ensure developers' intent and identity verification through the payment system. This significantly reduces spam and malware-laden games created by anonymous accounts.

Roblox has upgraded its monitoring system with Multimodal AI, capable of analyzing text, voice chat, and in-game behavior in real-time. If the AI detects risky conversations or promotional behavior, the system immediately disconnects the connection and alerts parents via the mobile app.

This measure aligns with the Online Safety Act of many countries, which mandates platforms to have a "duty of care" for minors. This move aims to maintain legal access to the platform for users globally.
