Google Chrome Adds Multi-Tab Context and Split-Screen Links.
Google has officially rolled out a significant update to AI Mode within Chrome, introducing two powerful features designed to streamline the research process. These enhancements aim to reduce "tab hopping" the constant switching between search results and AI assistance by keeping everything within a single, unified view.
1. Seamless Side-by-Side Browsing
Chrome desktop will now open links clicked within AI Mode in a split-screen (side-by-side) view. Instead of launching a new tab and losing your place, the linked webpage appears right next to the AI panel. This allows users to:
Maintain Context: Read the source material while keeping the AI conversation visible.
Instant Interaction: Ask follow-up questions about the specific webpage you just opened without breaking your flow.
2. Multi-Tab Context and Search
AI Mode can now search across and summarize specific open tabs. By clicking the "+" icon in the search box, users can hand-pick which tabs they want the AI to analyze.
Custom Inputs: You can mix and match different context sources, such as combining several open tabs with uploaded images or PDF files to get a highly tailored response.
These features are currently live for users in the United States and will be gradually expanded to other regions in the coming months.
This change isn't just about the UI; it's about transforming AI into a "persistent assistant" that stays with you throughout your web browsing. Previously, AI would stop working when you left the search page, but now it "follows" you through various web pages, analyzing data in real-time.
The AI's ability to handle multi-input from open tabs, images, and PDFs simultaneously demonstrates the power of the latest Gemini model, which boasts significantly more accurate complex context reasoning, making advanced research much easier.
The split-screen feature addresses concerns for content creators, as users still access the actual website and ads load normally, unlike when AI summarizes information solely on the search page. This reflects Google's approach of balancing user convenience with website survival.
This feature is part of Google's "AI-First Browser" strategy to prevent users from migrating to competing browsers like Arc or Edge's AI features (copilot), focusing on ease of use and seamless integration with existing browsing habits.
