Anthropic Goes Big Gigawatt-Scale TPU Deal with Google to Fuel Claude 2027 Evolution.

Anthropic Goes Big Gigawatt-Scale TPU Deal with Google to Fuel Claude 2027 Evolution.
Anthropic Scales for the Future: Multi-Gigawatt Google Cloud TPU Deal to Power Next-Gen Claude Models

Anthropic has announced a major expansion of its partnership with Google Cloud, securing massive computational capacity to power the development of its next-generation Claude AI models. The agreement centers on the use of Google Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), scaling up to a combined power capacity of several gigawatts. This infrastructure boost is designed to meet surging global demand and support the highly anticipated hardware expected to go live by 2027.

The Broadcom Connection

A key player in this infrastructure play is Broadcom, the primary chip manufacturer for Google’s custom TPUs. Broadcom confirmed its role in this expansion, noting that the total processing power it currently supports for its custom silicon clients has reached approximately 3.5 gigawatts.

Explosive Revenue and Enterprise Adoption

The scale of this expansion is driven by Anthropic's staggering financial performance. The company reported that its 12-month trailing revenue, which stood at $9 billion at the end of last year, has skyrocketed to $30 billion.

Key growth indicators include:

  • Revenue Growth: A more than 3x increase in less than a year.

  • High-Value Clients: The number of enterprise customers paying over $1 million annually has doubled, now exceeding 1,000 clients.

This rapid ascent has made the immediate expansion of cloud infrastructure a top priority for Anthropic to maintain service quality and innovation speed.

Speaking of units in "gigawatts" (GW) reflects that we've moved beyond the era of counting chips. The most limited resource isn't just the chips themselves, but "electrical energy." Anthropic's pre-ordering of GW-level capabilities (equivalent to several large power plants combined) indicates that the next generation of Claude will be many times larger and more complex than the current model.

Choosing to use Google TPUs (manufactured by Broadcom) instead of relying solely on NVIDIA GPUs is a diversification strategy. TPUs are designed specifically for training transformer-level models, which may allow Anthropic to achieve better performance per watt than competitors, reducing long-term costs.

Having over 1,000 paying customers in the millions of dollars reflects that Claude has become the "backbone" of Fortune 500 organizations. These businesses don't just use AI for casual chatting; they utilize it in core operations requiring the highest level of stability and security. This is why Anthropic has to invest massive amounts of money to expand its system to keep up.

Even though Anthropic has also received investment from Amazon (AWS), this expanded deal with Google Cloud clearly demonstrates Anthropic's plan to become a multi-cloud player, accessing different chip technologies and expanding its service coverage globally.
