Meta Signs Multi-Billion Dollar GPU Pact with AMD to Secure AI Future.
Meta Strikes Massive 6GW Deal with AMD: The Race for AI Infrastructure Dominance

Just days after placing a substantial order with NVIDIA, Meta has doubled down on its infrastructure expansion by announcing a massive procurement plan for AMD Instinct GPUs. This strategic move signals Meta’s commitment to diversifying its AI supply chain and securing the massive computing power required for its next-generation AI data centers.

The 6GW Powerhouse Project

While the exact number of GPUs remains undisclosed, the scale of the deal is staggering: Meta plans to deploy AMD hardware with a combined power consumption of up to 6 Gigawatts (6GW).

  • Timeline: Deliveries for this long-term project are set to begin in the second half of 2026.

  • Hardware Specs: The initial shipment will feature custom AMD Instinct GPUs based on the MI450 architecture, paired with 6th Gen Epyc CPUs and AMD’s Helios rack systems a platform co-developed by the two companies.

The "Stock-for-Silicon" Incentive

The deal includes a significant financial incentive: Meta is eligible to receive up to 160 million AMD shares. These shares will be distributed based on AMD’s ability to meet delivery milestones.

Interestingly, this deal is a mirror image of the agreement OpenAI signed with AMD in October 2025, which also featured a 6GW power capacity and a 160 million-share incentive, suggesting a standardized "mega-deal" template AMD is using to challenge NVIDIA’s monopoly.

6 gigawatts of power is enough to supply approximately 4.5 to 5 million homes, or equivalent to 5-6 large nuclear power plants. Meta's purchase of chips at this power level demonstrates that "future data centers" will be many times larger than they are today.

The use of the MI450 chip (expected to be a direct competitor to NVIDIA's Rubin architecture) gives Meta greater leverage and reduces the risk of vendor lock-in.

The designation as a "custom version" means that Meta may have asked AMD to optimize the chip to run the Llama family of models at their highest efficiency, resulting in better performance-per-watt than commercially available chips.

The offering of 160 million shares (a massive sum) is AMD's way of securing a major customer as a long-term "partner." If AMD is successful, Meta's shares will increase in value, reducing business risk for both parties (risk-sharing).
