Mojang clarified that players on legacy hardware below these specs will not be actively blocked from launching the game right away. However, performance may degrade significantly, and once the transition from legacy OpenGL to the Vulkan 1.3 rendering pipeline is complete, outdated systems without Vulkan support will no longer be able to launch the client.

Meanwhile, Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on Windows PC (the edition used for cross-play, as macOS and Linux rely on Java Edition) currently retains its lower baseline requirements, requiring just 4GB of RAM and entry-level legacy processors.

The engineering shift behind this is significant. For the past 17 years, Minecraft: Java Edition has relied on an outdated OpenGL graphics pipeline. Upgrading the game's renderer to Vulkan 1.3 allows Mojang direct control over GPU memory allocation and CPU multithreaded drawing calls. This improvement lays the foundation for better framing, Apple Silicon/Arm optimizations, and smoother rendering of high-rendering-duration world sections.

The explicit mention of Apple M1/M2 and Qualcomm Snapdragon X processors in the system requirements underscores Mojang's commitment to the current Arm-based PC landscape. Historically, running Java Edition on Arm hardware required a conversion layer or custom community launchers. Native support ensures optimal battery life and performance on newer MacBooks and Windows-on-Arm Copilot+ PCs.

The requirement for 12GB of RAM in systems using integrated GPUs (iGPUs) reflects how newer versions of Minecraft load world sections into system memory.
