Gemini New Background Execution is Changing the Android Experience.
Gemini Goes Autonomous: Google Unveils Multi-Step AI Agent at Galaxy S26 Launch

Alongside the debut of the Samsung Galaxy S26, Google has introduced a groundbreaking evolution for Gemini on Android. Moving beyond simple queries, Gemini now supports Multi-step Autonomous Tasks, transforming the AI from a chatbot into a proactive "AI Agent" capable of executing complex workflows in the background.

The Power of Background Execution

Users can now issue high-level commands, such as "Book a ride home" or "Order my usual lunch and find a 10% discount code," and Gemini will handle the entire process searching for data, navigating apps, and confirming transactions entirely in the background. This allows users to continue multitasking on their devices without staying glued to the AI interface.

Privacy and Developer Integration

To address security concerns, Google emphasized a "User-in-Control" philosophy:

  • Live Status Bar: A persistent indicator shows exactly what Gemini is doing in real-time.

  • Granular Access: Gemini operates on a "limited-access" basis; it does not have default access to the entire device. Users can revoke permissions or halt a task at any moment.

  • Developer Tools: Integration is powered by AppFunctions, allowing Android developers to bridge their apps with Gemini. Data processing is handled locally via the MCP (Model Context Protocol) to ensure maximum privacy.

Availability

The feature is currently in Early Beta Preview, initially exclusive to the Samsung Galaxy S26 series, Pixel 10, and Pixel 10 Pro. The rollout begins in the United States and South Korea.

This marks a transition from simply "answering questions" (text-in, text-out) to "action-oriented." This version of Gemini acts as a Large Action Model, understanding the UI structure of various apps and able to press buttons on our behalf something Google has been striving for since the early days of Google Assistant.

The use of the MCP protocol is a significant development in the tech world, as it's an open standard allowing AI from different vendors to communicate with diverse databases. Google's emphasis on local processing reduces latency and provides users with peace of mind, knowing that order information or ride-booking details aren't entirely sent to the cloud.

The launch of this feature at Samsung's event highlights the two companies' collaboration to compete with Apple Intelligence, emphasizing "cross-app intelligence," a capability currently limited to Siri.

In the future (late 2026), Gemini is expected to not just receive commands but will begin "nudge" multi-step tasks, such as "I see you have an outside meeting at 2 PM. Should I book an Uber for you?" This will fundamentally change the way we use smartphones.
