New Google Search adds a "plus" button for images and documents for AI-powered analysis.
A new plus button has appeared in Google Search, allowing users to upload images and documents for AI analysis via Google AI Mode. Google has not yet published an official article about this button, but states that the change is now fully enabled on the Google Search homepage for desktop users in the United States using English. This plus button will be rolled out to all users who have access to AI Mode later this week.

Uploading an image or document allows you to utilize Google AI Mode, where Gemini will break down the content, making it possible to ask questions about it. For example, if you upload an assembly guide for a model kit, you could ask where to purchase certain parts online. If you upload a picture of a guitar, you can ask what kind of pickups it uses.

This newly enhanced AI feature arrives in Google Search as the company has made a full pivot toward AI amid intense competition from OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT. While the two companies have taken turns developing features, the recent release of Gemini 3 put OpenAI in a "crisis" situation, compelling them to launch the GPT-5.2 model to remain competitive.
