National University of Singapore (NUS) Unveils Comprehensive AI Education Strategy Across Curriculum, Tools, and Library Data

The National University of Singapore (NUS) has announced a sweeping institutional framework to integrate artificial intelligence across higher education. The university’s strategy rests on three core pillars: mandatory AI coursework for all undergraduates, universal campus-wide deployment of ChatGPT Edu, and transforming its library archives into an accessible AI knowledge base.

Previously, NUS provided access to OpenAI tools on a restricted basis, limiting enterprise licenses primarily to specialized departments such as the NUS School of Computing. The new initiative expands access to every student, faculty member, and administrative staff member across the institution.

Mandatory Core AI Curriculum

Under the revised academic guidelines, all undergraduate students at NUS will be required to complete at least two dedicated AI courses. Among the first announced modules is THE1008: Applied Generative AI: From Prompting to Evaluation. This foundational course aims to equip students with practical skills in large language model (LLM) interaction, prompt engineering, and critical evaluation of AI outputs before they progress to advanced discipline-specific studies.

Unlocking Campus Knowledge with 'AI Sense Maker'

To complement universal tool access and coursework, NUS is digitizing and indexing its vast academic holdings. The university has launched AI Sense Maker, a proprietary chatbot trained on NUS Library's digitized assets, which currently include over 150,000 cataloged items. The tool enables students and researchers to perform complex queries, generate synthesis summaries, and extract relevant research data directly from verified university archives.

A shift in academic philosophy and the initial response to AI at universities focused on detection and limitation. NUS's mandatory module (THE1008) signals a move towards AI literacy and critical evaluation. Teaching students how to assess model illusions, validate data sources, and understand algorithmic biases ensures that AI is viewed as an intellectual construct rather than a shortcut to academic work.

The details regarding ChatGPT Edu implementation provide excellent technical context. Unlike consumer ChatGPT, OpenAI's enterprise-level educational approach incorporates data privacy protections, ensuring that student questions, research outlines, and university data are not used to train publicly available model bases. Widespread access fosters equity across faculties, ensuring that students in humanities and social sciences receive the same technological benefits as computer science students.

By connecting the LLM to a digital library catalog of 150,000 items via Enhanced Search Result (RAG) generation, the National University of Singapore (NUS) can solve illusions encountered in typical AI models. Instead of retrieving unverified data from the public web, the AI references core institutional documents peer-reviewed by subject matter experts, offering a viable model for university libraries worldwide.
