Native Linux Support Coming to Epic Games Store as Part of Launcher V2 Overhaul.
One of the longest-standing limitations of the Epic Games Store has been its restriction to Windows and macOS, primarily due to the absence of a native Linux build for the official Epic Games Launcher.
However, an Epic Games employee recently confirmed on Discord that an official Linux version is actively under development. The port is being built as a key component of the major Launcher V2 overhaul. Despite the confirmation, Epic noted that the official release will still take some time, as the project involves broader platform engineering beyond simply compiling native Linux binaries.
Currently, Linux users relying on the Epic Games Store must utilize third-party, open-source clients such as Heroic Games Launcher. Reacting to the news on Reddit, the developers behind Heroic expressed no concern over Epic’s official entry into the Linux space. They highlighted that Heroic remains dedicated exclusively to the Linux community, whereas Epic historically treats Linux as a tertiary platform behind Windows and macOS.
The reason Epic eventually invested in Linux engineering was that the massive commercial success of Valve's Steam Deck and the surrounding SteamOS mobile ecosystem elevated desktop Linux into a hugely profitable gaming market. Epic's lack of a native launcher meant it missed out on direct monetization opportunities from mobile gaming devices, forcing users to overcome technical hurdles with external intermediaries.
Heroic spent years optimizing, integrating Wine/Proton's direct compatibility tools, and adding native support for GOG and Amazon Prime Gaming alongside Epic. Even though Epic released an official client, high-level users from the community are likely to continue using Heroic due to its low resource consumption and deep customization features that official proprietary launchers can barely match.
While Epic's Unreal Engine had offered cross-platform compilation tools for Linux to game developers for years, the infrastructure of consumer-based app stores had been left behind. The native Linux version of Launcher V2 signaled that Epic was finally aligning its distribution platform with its underlying game engine to attract non-Windows PC gamers.
