Google Upgrades Android Quick Share with Proximity-Based Contact and Media Transfer

Google has officially released a major update to Android Quick Share, introducing seamless proximity-based sharing capabilities. Users can now exchange contact information, photos, and videos simply by bringing two compatible Android smartphones close to one another.

When two devices are placed side-by-side, an automated prompt appears on-screen asking users to choose which contact details such as profile photos, phone numbers, or email addresses they wish to share for an instant mutual exchange. For media transfers, the physical proximity trigger bypasses manual device scanning, allowing users to send photos and videos directly through the standard Quick Share pipeline.

Supported Hardware & Rollout Schedule

The proximity sharing feature is currently live for Google Pixel 6 models and newer. Google confirmed that support will next expand to Samsung’s latest foldable flagship lineup the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Fold 8, and Flip 8 before rolling out to broader third-party Android hardware manufacturers by the end of the year.

Google's approach directly addresses the point of conflict in near-proximity file sharing by introducing proximity gestures. Google creates something directly comparable to Apple's NameDrop and AirDrop features. Reducing the need for users to manually open a search window and wait for the target device icon to appear significantly reduces transaction time during real-world social or professional networking.

Physical proximity triggers rely on highly accurate spatial awareness, often incorporating Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), Near Field Communication (NFC), and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) radio. The requirement for physical proximity acts as an implicit layer of consent, preventing accidental file transfers or malicious "air-dropping" attempts from strangers in crowded public spaces.

Because the Android ecosystem comprises hundreds of devices from different manufacturers, Google prioritized its own Pixel product line and Samsung's flagship foldable smartphones first. Establishing a unified Quick Share protocol among its key OEM partners was crucial for Google to ensure a high level of cross-brand reliability before rolling out the feature to the broader mid-range Android market.
