Recognizing that not every user wants their public thoughts amplified across the platform, Bluesky has introduced an opt-out privacy setting designed specifically for those who fear going viral.

Located under the Privacy section in user settings, this feature allows individuals to hide their posts from appearing in algorithmic discovery feeds (such as the main Discover feed) served to non-followers. Because all public posts on Bluesky are opted into algorithmic distribution by default, users who prefer a lower profile must manually toggle this restriction on.

A Semi-Public Middle Ground

This setting creates a functional "semi-public" middle ground situated between completely public accounts and locked, private profiles:

  • Public Access Remains Intact: The account remains public. Anyone who visits the user's profile directly or searches for their handle can still read, quote, and view their posts.

  • Algorithmic Isolation: The post is excluded from global recommendation engines and viral discovery algorithms. It will only naturally surface in the chronological feeds of account followers.

By limiting algorithmic distribution without fully locking the account, Bluesky provides users with granular visibility control allowing them to maintain an open profile while opting out of algorithmic audience expansion.

The forced rapid spread of content is exhausting for users. On platforms like X or TikTok, even a small thought can be pushed by an algorithm to millions of strangers, often resulting in resentment, harassment, or unwanted scrutiny—a phenomenon known as "context collapse." By allowing users to opt out of algorithmic feeds, Bluesky addresses the growing need for a less stressful social network where people can converse publicly without fear of unintentional rapid spread.

Bluesky operates on the open-source AT Protocol, which supports user-created feeds alongside the official algorithms. Enabling this privacy feature signals custom feed creators across the network to exclude user posts from global indexing, giving creators direct control at the protocol level over how their information spreads throughout the ecosystem.

For almost two decades, social networks have forced users to choose between two options: either completely lock down accounts or expose all posts to a global recommendation system. Bluesky's semi-public model offers a modern middle ground. It provides a practical solution for journalists, researchers, and ordinary posters who want an accessible public portfolio without having to engage in algorithmic engagement.
