Anthropic Permanently Locks In Reduced API Pricing for Claude Sonnet 5 Amid Fierce Global Price War

Anthropic has officially announced that it will permanently retain the promotional API pricing for its mid-tier AI model, Claude Sonnet 5. The pricing structure set at $2.00 per million input tokens and $10.00 per million output tokens (claude-sonnet-5) was originally introduced as a temporary promotional discount through the end of August following the model's launch in July.

Under its original rollout strategy, Anthropic had planned to adjust Sonnet 5’s pricing upward to $3.00 / $15.00 per million tokens (input/output). However, the AI lab has now chosen to make the $2/$10 rate permanent indefinitely.

This strategic price lock comes hot on the heels of OpenAI's recent price cuts across its Terra and Luna model families just last week. Industry analysts point out that this aggressive price war among major American AI labs is largely driven by intensifying global competition particularly from high-performing, heavily subsidized frontier models originating from Chinese tech firms that offer comparable benchmarks at drastically lower API price points.

Why are mid-range models like Sonnet 5 the primary battleground for pricing, while top-tier "ultra" models are reserved for complex computing? Mid-range models handle over 80% of typical commercial workloads, such as automated code generation, customer support bots, and document extraction. Because these tasks run continuously in enterprise pipelines, even a $1 difference per million token can change an enterprise customer's annual cloud spending by millions of dollars.

Open and proprietary models from China (e.g., the Qwen and DeepSeek series) have achieved comparable performance to Western mid-range models in coding and computing benchmarks while charging significantly less. To prevent developers from resorting to foreign APIs or self-hosted, weighted open models, US labs need to reduce profit margins and keep API pricing low.

Maintaining low API pricing without incurring losses requires significant improvements in software and hardware performance. Techniques such as continuous batch processing, predictive output decoding, custom hardware acceleration, and optimized quantization models can significantly reduce hardware computing costs per query, directly benefiting developers in maintaining long-term market share.
