WordPress Launches Official Browser Extension to Streamline Site Admin and Developer Tools

WordPress has officially launched its first-party browser extension, designed to streamline site management, declutter the front-end user experience, and provide built-in tools for web developers.

The extension introduces several core features aimed at improving daily workflows for creators and site administrators:

  • Admin Bar Management: Eliminates the native black admin bar pinned to the top of logged-in WordPress sites, shifting all admin controls directly into the browser's extension toolbar icon. Users can toggle the toolbar off globally or customize behavior on a per-site basis.

  • Site Detection & One-Click Dashboard Access: The browser icon dynamically indicates whether any visited website is powered by WordPress, as well as whether the user is actively logged into that specific site. For logged-in sites, users can access the /wp-admin dashboard directly from the extension dropdown menu.

  • Integrated Developer Toolkit: Includes responsive mobile preview viewports, single-page cache purging, and visual block boundary outlines. The WordPress core team noted that executing these diagnostic utilities at the browser extension level provides better performance and accuracy than injecting scripts into web pages.

The extension is open-source and available on GitHub. Users can download it via the Chrome Web Store (compatible with all Chromium-based browsers, including Brave and Microsoft Edge) and the Mac App Store for Safari.

The traditional WordPress admin bar injects inline CSS styles into the front-end, often breaking static header layouts, navigation bars, and fixed banners during design testing. Moving admin controls directly to the browser eliminates scrolling issues, allowing developers to preview what end users see before rendering.

Running website diagnostics directly on a page can conflict with caching plugins, Content Delivery Networks (CDNs), or security headers. Working at the extension level allows diagnostic utilities (such as checking Gutenberg block boundaries or clearing page cache) to bypass local page execution constraints, resulting in cleaner rendering tests.

As WordPress continues to push full-page website editing and the Gutenberg headless architecture, moving admin tools off the page and into the browser's native UI elements will create a faster, more application-like experience for managing multiple client websites simultaneously without constantly switching between open tabs.
