Apple Disbands Dedicated VR Team as John Ternus Pivots Strategy Toward Smart AR Glasses.
Apple Reportedly Disbands Dedicated VR Team Under CEO John Ternus to Pivot Toward Smart AR Glasses

Apple has reportedly laid off its entire virtual reality (VR) development division as part of a strategic reprioritization directed by new CEO John Ternus, who ordered an immediate pause on standalone VR hardware initiatives. The workforce reduction impacted approximately 60 employees within the Apple Vision division the core group responsible for developing the Vision Pro spatial headset. However, sources clarify that the broader Vision Pro project remains active, with cuts isolated specifically to pure VR engineering units.

The restructuring aligns with recent industry reports indicating that Apple is deprioritizing heavy spatial computing headsets in favor of lightweight Augmented Reality (AR) smart glasses. Consequently, long-standing rumors regarding a scaled-down, lower-cost "Vision Pro SE" variant have quietly faded from product roadmaps.

To preserve key software investments, a significant portion of the remaining Vision Pro engineering team is being reassigned to lead the new smart glasses initiative. This transition leverages existing developer expertise, as both hardware ecosystems are engineered to share the foundational visionOS operating system architecture.

The reason Apple is shifting away from closed VR designs is that while optically transmitted headsets like Vision Pro offer excellent display density and processing power, their weight, limited battery life, and social isolation limit widespread consumer adoption. The migration of engineering capabilities to transparent AR glasses reflects a long-term strategy aimed at replacing smartphone interaction with lightweight, non-disruptive heads-up displays suitable for all-day wear.

Building a new spatial operating system from scratch requires massive software investment. By making future smart AR glasses run on visionOS, Apple ensures that existing spatial audio frameworks, eye-tracking algorithms, hand gesture recognition, and developer APIs can be directly deployed to lighter hardware, significantly shortening the development cycle for upcoming AR products.

Changes in senior management often indicate the cutting back on high-cost, low-profit "moonshot" projects in favor of commercially scalable products. Ending efforts to develop separate VR devices allows Apple to focus resources in the supply chain, custom silicon design, and optical engineering on consumer-friendly wearables that integrate directly into the iPhone and Apple Watch ecosystems.
