Google Sheets Launches Canvas Turn Raw Spreadsheets into Interactive Dashboards with Gemini AI.
Google has introduced Sheets canvas, a new capability powered by Gemini that allows users to instantly transform spreadsheet data into interactive, visual dashboards and custom apps without writing code or formulas.
To generate a visualization, users simply click the Gemini starburst icon in the top right corner and prompt the AI with natural language instructions describing their desired dashboard metrics and layout. The resulting canvas opens as a dedicated interactive tab within Google Sheets while remaining fully connected to the underlying source data. Users can continue refining the output through follow-up prompts such as adding new charts, rearranging elements, or toggling dark mode.
Currently, Sheets canvas is available in English and requires an active Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra plan (or eligible Gemini for Workspace tiers).
The workspace in Sheets isn't just a static image or read-only report; it functions as a fully read-and-write UI. For example, dragging cards across a created Kanban board or editing an image on a dashboard card instantly updates the cells behind it in your spreadsheet, and vice versa.
Finance teams, project managers, and operations leaders often spend hours copying spreadsheet metrics to external BI tools or presentation slides to deliver updates to executives. Canvas allows non-technical users to create interactive mini-applications directly within Google Sheets in seconds.
By allowing users to edit design elements, such as displaying a notification saying "Change this dashboard layout to dark mode" or "Add a bar chart comparing monthly revenue," Google is moving away from complex menu toolbars. Conversational design allows users to customize the software's user interface using intuitive language, rather than having to learn complex spreadsheet settings.
