[Rumors] Apple Partners with Alibaba to Train Custom In-House AI Model for the Chinese Market.
According to a report from Reuters citing sources familiar with the matter, Apple has begun training a custom, localized artificial intelligence model specifically designed for the Chinese market. The initiative is being developed in partnership with Alibaba, which is providing technical and infrastructure support.
This development marks a strategic shift from earlier reports, which suggested Apple would directly integrate pre-existing models from Chinese tech giants Alibaba and Baidu to power Apple Intelligence on devices sold in mainland China.
Currently, Apple Intelligence remains unavailable in China one of Apple's most critical global markets. However, regulatory hurdles appear to be clearing; reports last month indicated that Chinese regulatory authorities approved an Apple Intelligence framework backed by Alibaba’s Qwen foundation model.
An official regional launch may be imminent following several software leaks. Clues first surfaced in iOS 26.4 testing builds in March, followed last week by an official setup document detailing Qwen integration with Siri on macOS, which was briefly published before being removed.
The reason Apple co-developed a custom model with Alibaba instead of using a standard global architecture is due to the strict content filtering, domestic data storage, and pre-approval requirements mandated by the Cyber Security Administration of China (CAC) for all publicly available AI innovation models. Collaborating with Alibaba allows Apple to maintain control over core user experience and privacy standards while relying on Alibaba's local regulatory compliance and server infrastructure in mainland China.
Chinese smartphone manufacturers (such as Huawei, Xiaomi, and Vivo) have already embedded advanced AI depth features into their flagship devices. The absence of Apple Intelligence in China has created a feature gap, making rapid rollout and approval crucial for Apple to protect its premium market share in the region.
Leaked documents linking Siri to Qwen suggest Apple is emulating its own global private cloud computing strategy. Uncomplicated and privacy-conscious tasks would likely be handled on-device using Apple's custom in-house models, while complex information retrieval requiring a large knowledge base would be seamlessly routed to a cloud endpoint hosted by Alibaba.
