AMD Crosses 30% x86 PC CPU Market Share Benchmark as Arm Competition Heats Up

According to the latest industry data from research firm Mercury Research, AMD has officially breached the 30% market share threshold in the total x86 personal computer CPU market encompassing both desktop and notebook segments. This milestone represents a dramatic trajectory of market expansion compared to two years ago, when AMD held a 21.1% share of the combined x86 client space.

A granular breakdown of the figures reveals strong momentum across individual device categories:

  • Desktop Dominance: AMD’s desktop CPU market share has consistently maintained its position above 30% over recent quarters, reaching 34.9% in the latest reporting period.

  • Notebook Gains: Accelerated adoption in the laptop segment pushed AMD’s notebook market share up to 28.9%.

  • Combined x86 Share: Driven by notebook growth, AMD’s total x86 PC CPU market share expanded to 30.3%, while legacy leader Intel saw its market share adjust to 69.7%.

Despite AMD's gains within x86 architecture, both legacy chipmakers face an emerging structural challenge from Arm-based PCs. Mercury Research reports that Arm-powered personal computers now account for 15.3% of the total PC market, maintaining a steady trajectory of market expansion.

How AMD is transforming its notebook product line: Historically, AMD's market share was primarily concentrated in budget-friendly consumer models. The current increase in market share reflects its penetration into the highly profitable enterprise segment and premium light-and-thin notebooks, where power efficiency and multi-threaded performance are key selling points for corporate IT procurement.

While competition between AMD and Intel within the traditional x86 ecosystem remains intense, the rapid growth of Arm-based processors (accounting for 15.3% of all PCs) has changed the long-term landscape. With the use of custom silicon delivering high battery performance and low heat dissipation, Arm processors are permanently establishing a third pillar in personal computing.

Breaking the 30% threshold gives AMD greater bargaining power with major original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as Lenovo, HP, and Dell. As AMD secures a larger allocation of volume in its flagship laptop product lines, the increasing economies of scale protect gross margins, allowing the company to continue investing in research and development across both its high-profit consumer PC and data center processor product lines.
