[Rumor] Foldable iPhone Delay? Reports reveal Production Problems in test batches at the factory.
For years, the Foldable iPhone has been the subject of intense speculation, with recent rumors pointing toward a definitive September 2026 launch. However, a new report from Nikkei Asia suggests that Apple’s path to a foldable future is hitting significant roadblocks that could jeopardize its release timeline.
Trial Production Challenges
Citing sources within the supply chain, the report reveals that the Foldable iPhone has officially entered the trial production phase at Foxconn’s facilities. Initial results have reportedly uncovered more technical issues than anticipated. If these complications are not resolved by May 2026, Apple may be forced to push back its launch and shipping schedules.
Limited Initial Supply
Current production targets for the foldable model are estimated at 7 to 8 million units. This represents less than 10% of Apple’s total projected iPhone output for 2026, which remains heavily weighted toward the high-margin Pro series.
A Major Shift in Launch Strategy
Apple is also rumored to be restructuring its annual release cycle. Under the new plan, the September 2026 keynote would focus exclusively on high-end hardware: the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the new Foldable iPhone. Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 18 and the rumored iPhone Air may be delayed until early 2027.
The main problem frequently encountered during the production testing phase is "creases" on the screen. Apple is known for its precision and may not release a product if the creases are too noticeable or the screen protector film isn't durable enough. Nikkei's report of "more problems than expected" may mean the hinge mechanism isn't fully compatible with the new LTPO screen.
May is a critical window for product sales in September, as it's when mass component ordering begins. If Apple can't resolve the engineering issues by next month, mass production plans will be delayed dominoly, leading to severe product shortages at launch.
The postponement of the regular iPhone model to 2027 reflects Apple's desire to position the iPhone 18 Pro and foldable models as "Halo Products" to attract high-end users and reaffirm its innovation leadership. Separate launches also reduce cannibalization between the high-priced foldable model and the lightweight iPhone Air.
There are industry rumors that Apple is testing new technology. "Self-healing," or a screen that repairs itself when minor scratches occur, could be one of the reasons for the negative reports if this technology isn't stable enough during the actual manufacturing process at Foxconn.
