OpenAI Brings GPT-5.6 Upgrades to ChatGPT: Introduces "Thinking Slider" for Sol and Unlimited Luna for Free Users

OpenAI has announced a major update to ChatGPT, bringing its next-generation GPT-5.6 model family originally released in June directly to consumer tiers with significant interface and performance upgrades.

For ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers, OpenAI is rolling out a newly customized edition of its top-tier model, GPT-5.6 Sol, as the new default option. Designed specifically for interactive web chats, this consumer edition differs from the specialized enterprise versions deployed in ChatGPT Work and OpenAI Codex. Notably, the update introduces an interactive "Thinking Slider," allowing users to manually adjust the trade-off between instant, low-latency responses and extended reasoning time for complex queries.

For Free and ChatGPT Go users, GPT-5.6 Luna is becoming the new default base model. OpenAI has removed messaging quotas on the Luna model, offering unlimited standard text messaging. However, usage caps remain in place for advanced capabilities, such as file uploads and web/code execution tools. Free users seeking deeper analytical reasoning can also toggle on a dedicated "Think Mode" powered by Luna.

The rollout for GPT-5.6 Sol with the adjustable reasoning slider begins immediately for Plus and Pro subscribers, while the phased deployment of GPT-5.6 Luna for Free and Go tiers will conclude over the coming week.

OpenAI is transforming how users interact with reasoning models. Previously, users had to choose between static models (e.g., standard mode versus reasoning mode). This new slider gives advanced users granular control over processing allocation during testing, allowing them to quickly downgrade thought time for fact-based questions to save time, or upgrade time for deep mathematical proofs and multi-step strategic operations.

The transition of users to the free and Go versions to unlimited messaging on GPT-5.6 Luna reflects the significantly reduced cost of inferring small-level models. By making Luna quota-free while limiting high-processing features (e.g., file parsing and code execution) and top-level models (Sol), OpenAI maintains a strong conversion path to paid subscriptions while still attracting mainstream users to remain in the ecosystem rather than switching to free alternatives.

The ChatGPT Sol model, distinct from the Work and Codex versions, demonstrates OpenAI's strategy of fine-tuning to suit individual tasks. Consumer ChatGPT demands high conversational fluidity, tone adaptability, and broad world knowledge, while the Codex and Work environments prioritize deterministic code generation, API formatting, and multi-file project restructuring.
