X Scraps Manual Dark Mode Toggle Pointing Users to Device-Level Settings.
Recent updates to the X (formerly Twitter) mobile app have sparked confusion among users. Many who previously utilized Night Mode reported that their interface unexpectedly reverted to Light Mode, with the manual toggle for Dark Mode seemingly vanished from the app's settings.
The Explanation: Device-Level Synchronization
Nikita Bier, Head of Product at X, clarified that Night Mode has not been removed but has been transitioned to follow Device Settings. This means X will now automatically switch between light and dark themes based on the user's overall smartphone configuration. If users want X in Night Mode, they must set their entire device to Dark Mode.
Bier defended this decision, arguing that maintaining a separate in-app toggle is redundant and often leads to technical bugs within the app's UI. He noted that this "system-synced" approach is already standard practice for major platforms like YouTube and TikTok.
A Departure from Twitter’s Legacy
The in-app Night Mode has been a staple since 2016, long before the Elon Musk era. Interestingly, even Elon Musk himself is a known advocate for the dark aesthetic, having previously floated the idea of making Dark Mode the only option for the app a plan he eventually walked back following intense user backlash.
Many users prefer app-specific settings, such as using their device in bright mode for better visibility outdoors but wanting to use X in dark mode for comfortable reading. Removing this feature is therefore seen as diminishing user authority.
For users with visual impairments or photophobia, automatically switching modes based on lighting conditions can be extremely inconvenient. Forcing a single standard might contradict the principles of inclusive design, which emphasizes user flexibility.
Psychologically, Brand X aims for an edgy and modern image, which is more suited to Dark Mode. The fact that some users' devices might temporarily diminish the premium feel of the brand that Musk is trying to project.
Bier's perspective on technical debt is partly true. Reducing overlapping settings allows for faster development of new features and reduces the likelihood of unforeseen bugs.
