EA Trims Battlefield 6 Teams Despite Record-Breaking Sales Amid Massive Saudi-Led Takeover
In a move that has sent ripples through the gaming industry, Electronic Arts (EA) has confirmed a wave of layoffs across the multiple studios behind Battlefield 6. Despite the title’s immense success ranking as the best-selling game in the United States for 2025 EA is restructuring its workforce as the project transitions into its next phase.
The "Realignment" of Battlefield Studios
The layoffs have impacted key studios, including Criterion, DICE, Ripple Effect, and Motive Studios. Affected employees were reportedly told that the cuts are part of a "strategic realignment" as Battlefield Studios moves from active development into a long-term Live Service model. This transition focuses on sustaining the game’s ecosystem through seasonal updates and microtransactions rather than the massive manpower required for a global launch.
Under New Ownership
These internal shifts come at a pivotal moment for EA. In September 2025, the gaming giant agreed to a massive acquisition deal by a consortium of three investment firms, led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). The acquisition process is currently underway and is expected to be finalized by mid-2026, marking a new chapter for the publisher.
In the AAA game industry, the phenomenon of "post-completion layoffs" is common. During development, a massive workforce is required, but once the game enters the live-service phase (system maintenance), most of the work focuses on creating minor content, reducing the need for engineers and designers to only 30-40% of the original team's capacity.
Acquisitions by PIF (Project Incorporation Investment Fund) often involve restructuring to increase "lean organization" before the deal is finalized in 2026. Investors want to see optimized profits, and reducing employee salary expenses after the game has reached its peak sales is the quickest way to improve financial statements before the deal closes.
Despite the layoffs, there are rumors that EA is considering creating a "Battlefield Universe" that integrates multiple game genres (such as Battle Royale and mobile). This "realignment" might be a way to shift resources to new projects that generate more consistent revenue than focusing on a single main installment.
This isn't just an EA phenomenon; it's a trend that major game companies are adopting. "Project-based hiring" is becoming more common to mitigate financial risk amidst increased competition and soaring production costs.
