The Secrets of Claude Code How Anthropic CLI Tool Processes Memories While You Sleep.
Anthropic "Claude Code" Leak Unveils Hidden Features: AI "Dreaming" and Stealth Protocols Exposed

Last night, a significant leak occurred when Anthropic Claude Code project was accidentally uploaded to the NPM registry. The incident triggered a massive wave of technical deconstructions from the global developer community. Alex Kim, a prominent AI developer, is among the experts who have shared a detailed breakdown of the source code, revealing several unconventional features hidden from public view.

Inside the Leaked Source Code

The analysis uncovers sophisticated mechanisms that highlight Anthropic’s unique approach to AI tool development:

  • Anti-Distillation Defense: Claude Code includes advanced logic to prevent users from scraping its outputs to train rival models. This includes the ability to decode obfuscated text to bypass direct interaction logging and the insertion of "dummy" tool calls to confuse data-harvesting bots.

  • Stealth Identification: To prevent data leaks in open-source environments, the tool features a hidden mode that masks the model’s specific name, ensuring that internal identifiers aren't exposed during public collaboration.

  • Profanity Logging: A complex system of regular expressions (regex) is integrated to detect profanity. Any detected violations are logged and sent back for safety auditing.

  • Autonomous "Kairos" Mode: Perhaps the most intriguing discovery is an autonomous operation mode codenamed "Kairos." This system allows the agent to run continuously. Remarkably, the code suggests a process where the AI can "dream" at night—a metaphorical term for synthesizing and summarizing the day's memories and logs to prepare for the next day's tasks.

Damage Assessment

Despite the leak, industry experts suggest the damage to Anthropic is minimal. As a Command Line Interface (CLI) tool, Claude Code is not considered a core intellectual property compared to the underlying LLM weights. Furthermore, many competitors, such as OpenAI’s Codex or Gemini CLI, already operate as open-source projects. While the leak provides a roadmap of Anthropic's development plans, it does not compromise the company's primary competitive advantage.

The codename Kairos (Greek for "appropriate time") reflects the transition from reactive to proactive AI. Its ability to operate continuously without constant human supervision is a significant step towards perfect AI agents.

Technically, the "dream" that Alex Kim discovered in the code is a process of memory consolidation. The AI distills long logs during the day into shorter context summaries to prevent the context window from filling up too quickly when starting the next day's work. This saves tokens and significantly improves accuracy.

Anthropic's inclusion of a system to prevent further training (distillation) demonstrates that "intelligence theft" of models through question-and-answer generation (synthetic data generation) is a top priority for AI companies this year. We may see "digital watermarks" or "encrypted answers" becoming standard in other CLI tools as well.

Although the CLI is not a core asset. But the fact that it leaked shows us just how deep Anthropic is trying to create a "Developer Experience (DX)", especially in managing file system permissions, which are more complex and stringent than many expected.
