Meta Unleashes AI-Powered Safety Shield to Protect Users Across Facebook and WhatsApp.
Meta Deploys Advanced AI to Combat Scams Across Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp

Meta has announced a major rollout of new AI-driven tools and features designed to fortify its platforms Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp against increasingly sophisticated fraudulent activities. Alongside these technical updates, the company revealed significant progress in its ongoing collaboration with global law enforcement to dismantle organized scam networks.

The AI Shield: Smarter Contextual Detection

As scammers evolve, Meta is leveraging advanced AI systems to analyze context more deeply. The new AI can rapidly scan text, images, and suspicious links to identify impersonations of public figures, brands, or fraudulent domains with unprecedented accuracy.

Proactive User Protection Features

Meta is introducing several proactive alerts across its ecosystem to protect users in real-time:

  • Facebook: New warnings will appear for friend requests from suspicious accounts such as those with few mutual friends or geographic locations that conflict with their profile information.

  • WhatsApp: Enhanced alerts will trigger when an attempt is made to link a WhatsApp account to a new device, preventing users from falling victim to QR code or verification code scams.

  • Messenger: AI-powered chat scanning will expand to identify common scam patterns, such as fake job offers, providing immediate prompts for users to block or report the suspicious sender.

Ad Transparency and Verified Ecosystems

To tackle the root of scam advertisements, Meta is tightening its verification requirements for advertisers. The company aims for over 90% of ads on its platforms to come from verified accounts by the end of 2026. This builds on a successful 2025 campaign, during which Meta removed 159 million fraudulent ads and banned 10.9 million accounts linked to call-center gangs and scam syndicates.

Scammers are increasingly using deepfakes of both audio and video in their scams. Meta's use of contextual AI goes beyond simply analyzing text; it examines digital signatures and anomalies in multimedia to verify authenticity and distinguish it from AI-generated fraud.

Aiming for a 90% verified ad targeting model is a major shift in online advertising. This significantly increases the cost for scammers, as they can no longer easily create new accounts using fake emails; instead, they will need genuine legal documents for identity verification.

Meta's greatest strength lies in cross-app data sharing. If a scam account is detected on Facebook, the system can immediately "pre-emptively ban" related accounts on WhatsApp and Messenger, making it more difficult for scammers by cutting them off from all communication channels simultaneously.

In addition to collaborating with the police, Meta has also begun working with financial institutions to share financial transaction trails linked to fake accounts, enabling faster "fund freezing" when scams occur on the platform.
