Instagram Scraps End-to-End Encryption Amid Low User Adoption.
Instagram to Discontinue End-to-End Encryption for DMs, Citing Low Adoption and Regulatory Pressure

Instagram has announced that its End-to-End Encryption (E2EE) for Direct Messages (DMs) will be officially discontinued, effective May 8, 2026. Users whose chats are affected by this change will receive notifications with instructions on how to download their message history if they wish to keep a backup.

The "Opt-In" Barrier

The move may come as a surprise to some, as many users were unaware that Instagram even offered E2EE. Unlike WhatsApp, the feature on Instagram was never enabled by default; it required users to manually "opt-in." According to Meta, Instagram’s parent company, the decision to scrap the feature stems from a lack of user engagement and low adoption rates.

A Shift in Meta’s Privacy Strategy

This decision marks a significant pivot for Meta. For over a decade, the company has championed E2EE, starting with WhatsApp and later making it the default for Messenger three years ago. However, the use of encryption has consistently put Meta at odds with national security agencies and law enforcement, who argue that E2EE hinders their ability to collect evidence in criminal investigations. Discontinuing the feature on Instagram may signal a broader shift in Meta's approach to balancing user privacy with regulatory compliance.

Many countries are beginning to enforce stricter laws regarding the monitoring of illegal content (such as CSAM) on social media platforms. Instagram's disabling of E2EE will allow Meta to more easily use AI to scan for harmful content, thus avoiding massive government fines—something impossible with encrypted messages.

It seems Meta is repositioning its platform, placing WhatsApp as the area for maximum privacy (hardcore privacy), Messenger for general communication with a focus on safety, and Instagram for content creation and commercial connections. The absence of E2EE will also allow its advertising and ad personalization features to work more accurately based on chat content.

Meta is often criticized for its lack of child and youth safety on Instagram. Disabling encryption will allow newer "Safety Tools" features to detect blackmail messages or threatening behavior in real-time before harm occurs—a point Meta often uses to counter privacy advocates.

Some analysts believe this could be an opportunity for competing apps like Signal or Telegram to attract privacy-conscious users away from Instagram. However, Meta is betting that most Instagram users prioritize "convenience and features" over "complex encryption."
