Meta New $1 Subscription Instagram Plus Brings Anonymous Story Viewing to Life.
Meta has begun testing a new subscription tier for Instagram, aptly named "Instagram Plus" Currently rolling out to select users in specific markets, this premium service offers a suite of advanced features designed for power users who want more control over their Story interactions and privacy.
Exclusive Features of Instagram Plus:
Custom Story Lists: Users can now create multiple categorized lists for Story viewers, moving beyond the single "Close Friends" (green circle) limitation.
Re-watch Insights: For the first time, subscribers can see exactly who has viewed their Stories multiple times.
Viewer Search: A dedicated search bar within the viewer list allows users to quickly find specific names.
Extended Expiry: Stories can now remain active for longer than the standard 24-hour window.
The "Ghost Mode" Highlight: Perhaps the most anticipated feature and a major selling point is the ability to view Stories anonymously. The original poster will not see the subscriber's name in their viewer list.
Pricing and Availability
Instagram Plus is currently in the testing phase in selected countries with localized pricing:
Philippines: 65 Pesos/month
Japan: 319 Yen/month
Mexico: Price varies by region
The features that let you know who has viewed a story repeatedly or allow for "hidden viewing" exploit basic human curiosity for monetization (Monetizing Curiosity), a strategy similar to the one LinkedIn and Snapchat+ successfully used to convert casual users into paying subscribers.
Unlike Meta Verified, which focuses on security and identity verification (Blue Checkmark), Instagram Plus prioritizes "User Experience" and user-friendliness. This demonstrates Meta's attempt to generate multiple revenue streams (Multi-stream Revenue) to reduce its reliance on advertising alone.
The Ghost Mode feature (viewing stories anonymously) is perhaps the most discussed point. On one hand, it concerns viewer privacy; on the other, it might diminish the "real-time interaction" that is part of Stories' appeal. Analysts view this as a way to attract users who enjoy "stalking" stories to use the app more frequently without worrying about their image.
The chosen testing locations in the Philippines and Japan are interesting strategies, as both countries have some of the highest Instagram Stories usage rates globally, strong privacy values, and robust micro-communities.
